About

A collection of studies inspired by being on, in, under and by the northern Thames Estuary.

The header image ‘Two Buoys’ by Brian Perry shows the buoys Weir and Oxley enjoying their Winter break away from Orford Haven at Felixstowe Ferry.

This began as a personal collection of material for an historical write-up of local buoys. It got out of hand: it is now about anything found interesting whilst sailing etc.. A possible objective is also to record images of some of our sea features for future reference.

The scope is mostly Walton Naze to Orford Ness and tidal waterways with some North Foreland to Great Yarmouth coverage. All items are ‘Work in Progress’ with some placeholders. The map feature may help curiosity to be satisfied on the spot and provide a productive use for mobile ‘phones.

The curiosity-led topics may interest others. Where information exists, the aim is to point the reader to it and references are included to assist in taking the topics further. Some topics do not seem well covered elsewhere so an attempt has been made to tell the story. Examples are Washington, Medusa and Deane.

Measurement units are diversely inclusive of Imperial, Nautical, Metric and £.s.d. Some may be able to convert easily: if not, a brief study of the Imperial system and £.s.d. will be its own reward.

Readers are encouraged to challenge and develop their own material. Linking to the site is welcome, please ask before reusing. Initially please use the Contact form.
