Two excellent books for the East Coast are Suffolk Sea Borders and Shoalwater and Fairway by H. Alker Trip who was based at Maldon in the years between the Wars. Some historical tidbits and challenging sailing, often at night, with no engine. He wrote a couple of others. Some of these have been reprinted but secondhand copies are available. He illustrated the books with sketches and was an accomplished artist, as well as an important figure in the Metropolitan Police: he wrote a book on Traffic Control1Road Traffic and its control by H Alker Tripp..
Suffolk Sea Borders by H Alker Tripp
Published in 1926 by “Leigh Ho” aka H.Alker Tripp an account of a voyage around Suffolk’s Coast and Rivers by the author and a young chap, his particular friend, Robertson. A good sailing tale with lots of history thrown in. He sets out from London in the yacht Irene in the 1920s with his inexperienced mate. He sails in our local waters as well as up to the Broads. Along the way, he manages to go aground in Loder’s cut . He goes into quite a lot of history, including the origin of Woodbridge. He gives a description of the Horse at Waldringfield and meets Ben Page a one-time barge mate.
A very pleasant read about gentler times.
Refers to pot buoys as dans and bowls.
