Samuel Pepys, known for Samuel Pepys Diary is covered fully elsewhere, some notes below give pointers to more information. However, of local interest is that he selected Anthony Deane, to set up the shipyard at Harwich. Both men, twice, became MPs for Harwich: the seats, along with Portsmouth were in the gift of the Navy so they had little campaigning to do.
He also commissioned Greenvile Collins, whose chart of the area which chart has a dedication to Pepys.
‘So hard is the business of the sea, to be at once thoroughly and rightly comprehended.’
